The Ukrainian Village is a Chicago neighborhood located in the west town neighborhood of Chicago. Its boundaries are Division Street to the north, Grand Avenue to the south, Western Avenue to the west, and Damen Avenue to the east. The Ukrainian Village is located south of Wicker Park, west of Noble Square and north west from the Loop.
By the 1930s, there were five Ukrainian parishes dotting Chicago’s neighborhoods, including some in the Byzantine-Slavonic style of St. Nicholas Cathedral. Built between November 1913 and January 1915, St. Nicholas is in the heart of the Ukrainian neighborhood. This neighborhood, northwest of the Loop, was first settled by Polish and Slovak immigrants, but with the rise of Ukrainian nationalism and the influx of political refugees during World War I, it assumed a Ukrainian cultural identity which lingers to this day.
